William Sichel to make second attempt at 126 year-old ultra-distance record
Sichel to give it another go
Orkney’s ultra-man, William Sichel, has vowed to have another shot at breaking the long-standing Scottish record for the six day endurance marathon.
In early July, Sichel went for the record, held since 1882 by Edinburgh-born George D Noremac, the ‘original Flying Scotsman,’ at the Hamm six day track race in Germany.
Though he won emphatically, recording 532.56 miles and winning by a distance of 30 miles – more than one marathon ahead of his nearest rival – it still wasn’t enough to break Noremac’s 126 year-old record, an incredible distance of just under 568 miles.
But now Sichel is to have another swipe at the record, and is launching his attack in April 2009 at the Athens International Ultra-marathon Festival.
“I narrowly missed it this year,” Sichel told In The Winning Zone. “[But] I believe I can break it, indeed I'm determined to break it at some point!”
“I'm assembling my support team now and tuning everything to that event. As a final stepping stone I will be competing in a 72 hour race in Phoenix, Arizona in December.”
