William Sichel successfully finishes 1,000 ultra-marathon in Greece
Orkney Ultra Distance Runner William Sichel successfully completely the Athens 1000 mile World Cup race in Athens Greece.
Held in late March, William finished the race in second place overall in 13 days 20 hours 8 minutes 1 second. The race was won by 54 year old German Wolfgang Schwerk.
En-route, 56-year-old William set World Age Group Records for 6 Days, 1000Kms and the 1000 miles. William also set a personal best for distance covered in 7 days.
In finishing the race, William also became the oldest British person ever to have completed 1000 miles in under 16 days.
A total of sixteen athletes started the race on Monday March 15th and eight competitors completed the 1000 miles within the 16 day time limit - five men and three women.
The weather conditions during the day were in the high 20s, but night-time conditions were ideal for William, dropping to no less than 10C.
But unfortunately the last two days were extremely windy, in what became known as the 'Athens Storm' . This made the final finishing days even harder than anticipated.
"Completing the 1000 miles was the greatest sporting achievement I have ever experienced,” said William.
“Overwhelming," he added!
William would like to thank sponsors Myproten and Loganair.
