Lemoncello, Scott and Scott qualify for Olympics
Scottish track athletes Susan Scott, Allan Scott and Andrew Lemoncello will join their compatriot Lee McConnell when they head to the Far East for the Olympics in just a few days’ time.
Fife steeplechaser Lemoncello left his qualification to the very last moment, running a personal best time of 8:22:95 on Friday evening at the Golden League meeting in Paris, just three hours before the deadline.
Though he finished eighth on the night, his time was comfortably within the British qualifying standard of 8:24:60.
Meanwhile, Susan Scott confirmed her credentials as an Olympian once again at the Luzern Spitzenleichathletik meeting in Switzerland on Wednesday when she ran 4:07.86, finishing third, but beating selection rival Hannah England in the process.
However considering she had finished second in the British trials the previous weekend, and that she has successfully beaten her nearest rivals at several junctures this season, she can consider herself hard done by that she had to wait until Saturday to be chosen.
And, now that she has made it this far, she is determined to ensure she gets to the final in Beijing.
“I really believe I can reach the Olympic final,” she told The Herald newspaper. “I was desperate to go in 2004, and could not believe the attitude of some of the athletes, who seemed just content to be there... I won’t feel happy with anything less than a place in the final.”
Glasgow hurdler Allan Scott, meanwhile, had done everything in his power to qualify on by running 2/100ths of a second within the required time of 13:55 on Wednesday night in Loughborough, making his selection a formality.
The Scottish quota could rise to five is Hayley Haining, the marathon runner, is called up as a last minute replacement for Paula Radcliffe, who is struggling with injury.
