Beth Potter confident for Euros after strong showing at British trials
Athlete Beth Potter set her sights on a European Junior Championships medal after qualifying for the GB squad this weekend.
Potter topped the podium in the 3,000m at the England under-20 Championships in Bedford and with her time of 9.17.59 minutes 12 seconds inside the qualifying standard the Scot will be among those heading to Serbia for this summer's showpiece junior event.
"I'm really looking forward to the Europeans and I'd like to go for a medal there. That's my aim but we'll see how it goes," said Potter, who is one of 15 up-and-coming athletes selected for the UK Athletics Heroes Project, supported by Original Source.
"There's a strong group of British girls so it spurs you on. It's really competitive so I was really nervous coming into this race, really nervous, but I was really happy to win - over the moon.
"I'm just going to prepare now and just keep doing what I'm doing and keep training well."
Bearsden schoolgirl Potter arrived in Bedford full of confidence having twice smashed the qualifying time in the lead-up to this weekend, including a personal best of 9.15.76 minutes in Loughborough.
And Potter admitted the sweltering heat in Bedford, which she claimed was hotter than her trip to India for last year?s Commonwealth Youth Games, had played a key role in preventing her lowering that time even further.
"It was good but it was really hot, it was worse than when I was running in India, too hot," she added.
"It does affect your performance because the heat was really bad and I'm not used to training in the heat.
"It's usually windy and rainy in Scotland. It was nice to have the time and I just wanted to win it and I've done that so it's good to run without the pressure and then come first, it's good for your confidence."
