Beth Potter looking ahead to ooportunity at British trials
Athlete Beth Potter has vowed to grab her European Junior Championship qualifying opportunity with both hands as she prepares for this weekend's trials in Bedford.
The City of Glasgow AC runner already has the required qualification time but will not be 100 per cent certain of her place at the showpiece event in Serbia unless she tops the 3,000m podium this weekend.
Potter will be among the favourites in Bedford following a PB last May, but will be up against it having struggled with a calf problem in the last week, while under 20 rival Kate Avery will be the favourite after finishing an impressive fourth at the Loughborough International in May.
But Potter - who is one of 15 up-and-coming athletes selected for the UK Athletics Heroes Project, supported by Original Source, is adamant she will do enough to earn a place in the GB squad this summer.
"I will be doing the 3000m in Bedford and I have already got the qualifying time for it which is a big confidence boost, I just have to be the first across the line now to guarantee my European place," said Potter.
"All I can do is take things day by day in preparation for the trials, I swam all last weekend because it hurt too much to run and that was good because it kept me active.
"Bedford isn't my favourite place to run, it is a really windy track and it definitely isn't my favourite but I will have to go there and do well regardless.
"There are a few girls that will be pushing me there like Charlotte Purdue and Kate Avery. Kate beat me at the Loughborough International so I am a little bit nervous.
"There are three places up for grabs for the Europeans and Kate and I am one of the fastest girls so hopefully that will be good enough for me to go."
