Eilidh Child puts Perth youngsters through their paces
Three Perth youngsters enjoyed a dream athletics masterclass with Team GB star Eilidh Child after winning places on the Aviva UKA Academy regional training session programme.
Holly Stevenson and siblings Charlotte and Andrew Grainger were in attendance as Child – who reached the 400m hurdles semi-final at the World Championships in Berlin in August - passed on tips, advice and ran a live session at the George Duncan Athletics Arena.
The Aviva UKA Academy is a fresh new approach to grassroots sports, designed to give every child in the country the opportunity to get involved in athletics by London 2012.
All three turned their hands to sprinting, hurdles and long jump and 11-year-old Perth Grammar School pupil Stevenson admitted she has been inspired to following in Child’s footsteps.
“I really enjoyed the day and I’ll definitely be carrying on with some of the sports now,” said Stevenson.
“Eli was really good and supportive to everyone – she was giving us lots of advice.”
Charlotte Grainger, 11, from Perth High School added: “I really enjoyed the long jump part of the day. It’s brilliant to hear from someone who has been to the World Championships.”
