Falkirk hammer thrower Myra Perkins has set her sights on wearing the Scotland vest at the 2010 Commonwealth Games following a successful season.

The 17-year-old began the season needing a new personal best of 53m plus to qualify for the World Youth Championships and comfortably achieved her goal with a best throw of 54.99m as she sealed her place on the plane to Italy.

Perkins went on to finish ninth in the final – having failed to hit her qualification heights and posted a best distance of 52.44m – before returning home and setting another personal best of 56.83m on her way to the Celtic Games title in August.

“The main aim for me this year was always the World Youths. I had to throw 53 metres which meant a new personal best,” said Perkins.

“Britain aren’t great at the throwing side of athletics but that has to change some time. I am quite a way off Sophie Hitchon who is under-20 British No.1 but I believe I can close the gap.

“London 2012 is a massive motivation and I will definitely be aiming to get there and there is the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow as well which speak for themselves really.”

Perkins previously underlined her star potential at last year’s Commonwealth Youth Games in India where she missed out on a place on the podium by seven centimetres.
