Mordi has her sights set on trimple jump glory

Britain is crying out for a new triple jump queen according to Nony Mordi, and the Edinburgh University student believes she is heir to the throne.

Not since Ashia Hansen picked up Commonwealth and World Championship gold in 2002 and 2003 have Britain shone in the women's triple jump but Mordi believes there is a wind of change sweeping across UK athletics.

The 21-year-old might have missed out on a place on the plane to the Beijing Olympics last year but came on leaps and bounds in 2008 becoming the first Scot to break the 13 metre barrier.

Mordi marked an impressive indoor season by taking the British indoor crown in Sheffield in February and now has her sights set on European under-23 Championship glory in July.

"At the moment in the UK triple jump is not a sport we are blessed in, said Mordi, who finished 2008 as the British No.2.

"Since Ashia no-one has come along and taken the sport forward, but I'm confident that will soon change.

"There are now a big group of us, we are all young and jumping about the same distances and that is important as we are and will continue to push each other forward.

"We have seen the positive effect it has had in the 800m with Jenny Meadows, Marilyn Okoro and Becky Lyne all pushing each other and I hope that can help me get to the Europeans this year and be successful."
