McConnell's season ends with a whimper as GB women run a poor 4x400m final
Lee McConnell failed in her bid for a hat-trick of World Championship medals in Berlin on Sunday.
McConnell was looking to salvage something from a season ruined by injury but Great Britain’s 4x400m women failed to medal for the first time in six years.
“I felt a bit race rusty actually and I wasn’t that pleased with my leg,” she admitted.
“I could have done with a few more races coming into this really if I’m honest.
“It just wasn’t my best run, I’m afraid.”
Britain’s relay women have become something of a medal banker in recent championships, winning bronze in both Helsinki and Osaka.
But they were never really in contention for the podium at the Olympiastadion.
Olympic champion Christine Ohuruogu was drafted back into the line-up at the expense of 800m bronze medallist Jenny Meadows, who ran in Saturday’s heat
However, along with McConnell, Vicky Barr and Nicola Sanders, she was never in touch with the top three.
World champions Sanya Richards and Allyson Felix inspired America to victory as they topped the medal table with ten golds, while Jamaica and Russia completed the podium.
“Coming into this we knew we would probably finish in the top four and that we’d be in contention for a medal but we just couldn’t catch third place,” added McConnell.
