Andrew Lemoncello named in World Half Marathon Championships squad
Scotland’s Andrew Lemoncello has been selected to represent Great Britain at next month’s World Half Marathon Championships in Birmingham.
The former Stirling University student was Britain’s top ranked steeplechaser and won bronze at the 2008 European Cup.
But the 26-year-old failed to progress through his heat in Beijing and quit the track in January to focus on the marathon.
It is a decision which has paid dividends for Lemoncello and the Fife athlete will line-up in the Midlands on October 11.
England’s Paula Radcliffe spearheads the women’s squad, with UK Athletics naming a full team – five men and five women.
“This is a great chance to support a home championships with full teams, and I’m delighted that will be the case Birmingham,” said team leader Ian Stewart.
“It’s a new course, in a city of people who will really get behind our athletes.
“Not only are they in a position to show what they can do in front of that home crowd, but they have a genuine opportunity to fight for decent team positions.”
