Will Johnston wins Scottish Youth Triathlon title
Edinburgh’s Will Johnston, winner of June’s Blenheim Triathlon, showed his preparations are well on track for an attempt to win this month’s British Championships in London’s Hyde Park, after retaining his Scottish Youth’s title at Bellahouston Park this weekend.
Sixteen year old Will overtook arch rival and friend, Fife’s Cameron Milne half way through the 2500m run, following the 400m swim and 10km bike ride. The win confirms his place in September’s British Inter Regional Championships.
More importantly it shows he is in good form with just a fortnight to go before the British Championships.
“In the last year I’ve become stronger and skills have become better,” said Will, who works with triathlon Scotland National Coach, Chris Volley, in combination with the East of Scotland Institute of Sport, which provides high performance expertise to Scotland’s potential world class talent.
“Yesterday the key feature was it was a smooth race, everything technically good,” he said. “It’s encouraging and confidence boosting to know I’ve got it all under control.
“Before this year I trained in the individual disciplines and never practiced putting them together. Chris Volley is keen to try different methods and I’ve started bike-runs and adding transitions to the training sessions and it makes it second nature.
“I’ve got the British Championships in Hyde park in a fortnight. Last year I was third equal. This year I’ve got a chance of winning or getting on the podium at least, so I’m looking forward to it.”
Following in Will’s footsteps is younger sister, Kate, who won yesterday’s girls’ title.
