Child will sleep easy after making the 400m hurdles semi-finals in Berlin
Eilidh Child breathed a huge sigh of relief after making it through to the semi-finals of the 400m hurdles at the World Championships in Berlin.
The 22-year-old needed to finish in the top four of her heat to guarantee progression in the German capital and despite leaving it late duly did.
Child came home third in 55.96 seconds – over seven tenths away from Sinead Dudgeon’s ten-year-old Scottish record she set about breaking in the Olympic Stadium.
However Child admitted she was just relieved to make it past the heats after initially not knowing whether she had qualified or not.
“I didn’t know what was happening when I crossed the line but I am so pleased to qualify,” said Child.
“I thought coming round the bend I’m up here now but then I could see the other girls and I had to push it that last hurdle. Even then I wasn’t sure if I’d qualified yet.
“I thought I’d do exactly what I normally do through the first 200m then whatever is left in the home straight just go for it.”
