Carlin looks to the future

Daniel Carlin has vowed to rebuild the reputation of British shot put as he bids to book a place on the plane to the European Junior Championships this summer.

Not one shot-putter, male or female, wore the Team GB vest at the Olympics last summer with current British No.1 Carl Myerscough serving a lifetime ban and No.2 Mark Edwards unable to fulfil the UKA's qualification criteria.

But while Britain were left to contemplate the future of the discipline, Carlin was out representing Scotland at the Commonwealth Youth Games in India.

The 18-year-old finished eighth in the shot put in Pune and won't be resting on his laurels as attempts to take the first steps from promising junior to talented senior in Serbia in July.

"It is my final year before I start moving into the senior ranks so I hope I can mark it with a few good results and a personal best," said Carlin - who is one of 250 youngsters across the UK selected for the Lloyds TSB Local Heroes scheme.

"Shot and throwing in general hasn't got the greatest reputation in this country and that needs to change so hopefully I can have a good year really move myself forward as a thrower.

"I really hope I can throw well this year and make the team for the European Junior's and see what happens from there."
