McConnell achieves Commonwealth Games 200m standard



Sprinter Lee McConnell has one foot on the plane to next year's Commonwealth Games in Delhi after achieving the 200m qualifying standard at the Inter-Counties Championships in Bedford.

The 30-year-old 400m specialist stormed to half-lap success on Sunday coming home in a time of 23.29 seconds, just inside the Commonwealth standard of 23.35.

McConnell, who claimed Commonwealth 400m hurdles bronze three years ago in Melbourne, was 0.61seconds quicker than Helen Pryer in second and a further 0.17seconds ahead of Shaunna Thompson in third.

The Shaftesbury Harriers success comes a week after she finished twice finished fourth in the 100m and 150m at the Manchester street race.
