High jumper Nisbet searching for Commonwealth fever

Stirling University high jumper Jayne Nisbet has set her sights on next year's Commonwealth Games after she was reselected for the Lloyds TSB Local Heroes scheme.

The 20-year-old, who studies sports science, has a big year ahead as she bids to clear the qualifying height that will enable her to join her peers at the European Under-23 Championships in Serbia.

Last month Nisbet attended an Olympic masterclass at Heriots-Watt University with Team GB past and present Campbell Walsh and Katharine Merry, where she received expert advice on nutrition, big-competition preparation and injury-prevention.

And Nisbet, who finished eighth at the British Indoor Trials this season, is convinced her Edinburgh experience is just the kick-start she needs to achieve her goals which include the 2010 Commonwealths in Delhi and the 2012 Olympics.

"The main aim for me this year is the European Under-23 Championships in Serbia I have to jump 1.90 to get there and my person best is 1.82 but I am confident I can do it," said Nisbet, who will receive £1,000 towards the cost of training and competing.

"I train with the best British girls at the GB training camps so we know each other well and the next few years in the build up to 2012 are going to be really competitive.

"2012 is the main aim but I feel I am good enough to be pushing for a place at the Commonwealth Games next year in Delhi, that would be a great stepping stone to the London Olympics and then after that of course are the 2014 Commonwealths in Glasgow."
