Frost setting up for winter
Despite just returning from the Commonwealth Games, hammer thrower Andy Frost is already ramping up his preparations for London 2012...
After drawing a line under two years to forget at last month’s Commonwealth Games, Edinburgh hammer thrower Andy Frost has now set his sights on London 2012 glory.

Frost – who lives in Broxburn and competes for Pitreavie AAC – spent much of 2008 and 2009 on the sidelines after having three operations on a troublesome knee injury.

The 29-year-old returned to action in 2009 but believes he wasn’t truly fully fit until this year’s campaign which culminated with a fourth-place finish in Delhi.

To some that would represent heartache but with Frost’s previous travails the Edinburgh ace was delighted with his Delhi display, and insists his Indian experience has only whetted his appetite for next year’s World Championships.

“I was a little bit disappointed at first to have finished fourth in Delhi but it wasn’t a bad throw for me and when I look back it was quite a good event for me especially with the injuries I have had in the past few years,” said Frost – who also finished fourth at the Melbourne Commonwealth Games in 2006.

“Now I look at it I feel really positive and I am just looking forward to hopefully having a good winter and throw some good distances next year.

“I think the b-standard for the World Championships in South Korea will be within my reach next year and if I can keep improving I think I can get there.

“London 2012 is always in my mind and has been since it was announced it was coming and again like the world championships I think the qualifying standard can be in my reach.

“When you have so much time out with injury you do end up thinking am I ever going to be able to throw properly again but now I am back I am really appreciating it all and looking forward to next season now.”

However Frost faces a tough battle to part of the GB set-up for the World Championships with fellow Scot Mark Dry and Sale Harrier Alex Smith both having outperformed him last season.

But while fully respectful of his rivals on home soil the Broxburn ace is adamant he is a man heading in the right direction.

“My personal best came back in 2007 and I am confident I can be back to that sort of form next season if I have a good winter,” added Frost - one of 300 athletes that are supported through Bank of Scotland Countdown Camps at National, Development and Regional level every year.

“It is good to have the likes of Alex and Mark around because it pushes me on and helps challenge me and that will be a good rivalry next season.”

Bank of Scotland is a major sponsor of scottishathletics, supporting developing athletes through a range of national age group championships and National and Regional Countdown Camps throughout the year.
