All eyes will be on the UK in the summer of 2012 as the Olympic flame is lit to herald the start of the 30th Olympic Games in London. This is a landmark event in many ways for Scotland’s athletes.
At the 1908 London Olympics, Great Britain topped the medals table with 145 medals, including 56 golds. At the 2004 Games in Athens, Britain placed tenth with 30 medals, including 9 golds. The new chairman of the British Olympic Association has indicated that he wishes to see Britain in the top 4 of the London medals table. The fourth nation in the Athens table, Australia, secured 49 medals, with 17 golds. Scottish athletes can play a major role in helping achieve this target.
As Sir Craig Reedie CBE, former chairman of the British Olympic Association and current IOC member and Foundation Advisory Board member says;
‘The Olympic movement creates heroes and heroines who inspire young people to greater sporting effort. The Foundation can accomplish the same goals in Scotland.’
Winning the 2012 Olympic Games against the odds, coupled with the prospects of the 2014 Commonwealth Games being held in Glasgow, will have a catalytic effect, as both are on our own doorstep. The Foundation has a focus on these events as a marker of its long term success.
